In an ocean full of digital collectibles, Ape Harbour became the first digital shipyard.
view collectionIn 2021, digital asset ownership became mainstream with the rise of non-fungible tokens (NFTs). For the first time in history, people could own digital goods on the internet in a decentralized way. This paradigm shift, known as Web3, was made possible by the Ethereum blockchain.
Ape Harbour began with a simple idea in the summer of 2021. At that time, a new project called Bored Ape Yacht Club went viral on the internet. As BAYC members, we asked ourselves: If there is a digital yacht club, why not have digital yachts? Around that time, hundreds of new profile picture NFT projects were being released daily. To create something truly unique, we took a different approach — designing digital yacht artworks that could be used as Twitter banners. This allowed users to keep their profile picture NFTs, such as Bored Apes, while extending their social presence with a yacht NFT in their Twitter banner. This idea led to the creation of our first Genesis Yacht collection, which became the first verified yacht collection on OpenSea.
Following the Genesis Yachts, we continued to innovate and create different types of digital yachts. For Christmas 2021, we designed a Superyacht collection with hundreds of unique traits. Superyachts were free-to-claim for Genesis Yacht holders. Later on, we built different yachts for the Sandbox Game. As a result, Ape Harbour became the first metaverse shipyard in history.
Throughout our journey, we developed a range of features and add-ons around Ape Harbour. We created detailed 3D models of all Genesis Yachts, allowing owners to explore new possibilities — whether displaying them in AR to bridge the gap between the digital and real world or integrating them into their own creative projects. We also developed on-chain naming mechanisms, allowing Genesis Yacht and Superyacht owners to name their NFTs permanently on the Ethereum blockchain. In addition, we built interactive tools such as a Twitter banner generator, a Bored Ape hoodie generator, and a Discord-based yacht racing game. We developed two immersive experiences for the Sandbox Game metaverse and developed a community-driven adventure story.
Ape Harbour pushed the boundaries of the digital seas, blending creativity with blockchain technology. Though the project is no longer in active development, it remains a lasting digital artifact of what’s possible when technology, creativity, and community come together.
Ape Harbour became more than digital yachts — it was a growing world shaped by creativity and an international community. We expanded this universe through interactive experiences, including Waterfall Bay, our Social Hub in The Sandbox Game where multiple players could explore the decks of the Azure Pearl and complete quests. In a second Sandbox experience, the community could relive the adventure of Tales of Ape Harbour and take part in building the legendary yacht Blue Bayou.
Tales of Ape Harbour was a collaborative story, shaped by the creativity and contributions of our community. It follows three ape companions who unexpectedly uncover a long-lost secret—one that unlocks the past and sets them on the adventure of a lifetime. Finally, a story so engaging that even Bored Apes started reading.
Ape Harbour was made by Apes. Founded by Melmac and Chrisdotn, the project began with a simple idea — to build our own digital yachts.
